Wet Moulding Barrier

As part of the Bioeconomy Research Programme, the Wet Moulding Barrier project is a cross-industrial platform aimed at generating knowledge and know-how regarding strategies to improve barrier properties of wet moulded fibre products and characterisation thereof.

In today's world, the urgent need to reduce plastic waste has driven the search for sustainable alternatives to traditional plastic packaging. Recyclable packaging made from renewable resources, such as wet moulded fibre products, presents a promising solution. However, to effectively replace plastic, these eco-friendly alternatives must offer comparable barrier properties for moisture, oxygen, and oils. This is needed both for the sake of the content and to maintain the integrity of the packaging. Developing and understanding barrier technologies is essential to ensuring that recyclable packaging can perform reliably in various applications, from food preservation to hygiene and cosmetic products, while significantly reducing our environmental footprint.

The Wet Moulding Barrier project is aimed at advancing the knowledge and know-how significantly regarding improved barrier properties of recyclable wet moulded fibre products. A consortium of industry partners, together with RISE as coordinator, will investigate a number of aspects regarding barriers for packaging products produced using wet moulded fibre materials.

Barrier application

  • Understanding in depth relationship between different spraying technologies and barrier performance for wet moulded products
  • Advantages and limitations of pad printing as a barrier application technology on wet moulded substrate
  • Understanding the impact of the substrate properties and application parameters on barrier printability

Surface interactions

  • Improvements and characterization of physical and chemical surface properties towards barrier application.
  • Strategy towards wet moulded surface suitable for barrier application

Bulk properties

  • Alternative water/oil barriers that can substitute PFAS based systems
  • Increased understanding of how the barrier performance of wet moulded fibre networks can be influenced by chemistry and additives

Characterization

  • Quantitative evaluation of barrier performance on wet moulded products
  • Increased understanding of appropriate test methods and protocols for barrier characterization of wet moulded products
