Offering areas within Bioeconomy Arena
Biobased electronics and energy storage
RISE offers expertise, experience, equipment and versatile infrastructure to test new ideas in the field of electronics and energy storage. We can help you utilise raw materials from biorefinery processes by combining cellulose, lignin and other bio-based components in various forms with non-metallic additives to make them active, conductive or responsive in a beneficial way.
Biobased materials
RISE offers development of bio-based materials from design to scale-up, solution spinning of fibres from bio-based raw materials, production of nanocellulose, low-density bio-based foam, organic synthetic chemistry and chemical analysis.
Biofuels
RISE has extensive experience, expertise and test beds in the field of biofuels. We offer pyrolysis, hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL), slurry hydrocracking (SHC), fluid catalytic cracking (FCC), continuous hydrogenation over catalyst bed, organic synthetic chemistry and chemical analysis.
Biochemichals
RISE's offer in biochemistry includes pyrolysis of biomass fuels as well as coal and bio-oil, production and use of biogas, organic synthetic chemistry, chemical process development and scale-up, AI for chemistry and toxicology, and chemical analysis.
Sustainable packaging
RISE's offer in fibre-based packaging includes expertise, experience and equipment to address challenges in sustainable (circular) packaging, wet forming, stronger packaging, digitalisation, LCA, residual raw materials in barriers and adhesives, as well as knowledge of current legislation.
Industrial biotechnology
The Bioeconomy Arena represents a major strengthening of RISE's offering in biotechnology. Enzymes and microorganisms will revolutionise the transformation of low-value waste streams, such as sawdust, into valuable and sustainable products. Examples include proteins for food and animal feed, bioplastics, biofuels and arginine for fertilisers.
The new food-grade infrastructure features bioreactors of up to 10,000 litres, as well as downstream processing and a high-throughput strain development facility. Our biotech offering includes major expansions in strain development, process development, process optimisation and scale-up.
Chemical and thermochemical processes
RISE offers extensive experience and expertise in a wide range of different biorefinery and chemical processes. We offer access to relevant research infrastructure, and run relevant pilot-scale unit operations towards biomass fractionation with an established network of infrastructure providers that match our customers' unique needs.
Consumer products
RISE offers extensive experience, expertise and equipment for material characterisation, perception, textile perception, tactile perception, sensory analysis and consumer experience.
Food and feed
RISE has extensive experience and expertise in food and feed processes. Our experts have leading expertise in grain drying and agricultural residual streams for use in various biorefinery processes. We offer a food quality pilot plant, including equipment for extrusion and emulsion-based foods, microstructure and rheology characterisation of foods and other biomaterials, aroma chemistry and sensory perception laboratories, climate database for food products and laboratory drying facilities.
Pulping processes
RISE offers expertise and equipment for separation, fractionation and purification of cellulose from wood, agriculture and sea, improved yield, design of cleaner processes, improved separation and purification efficiency, digitalisation and simulations, characterisation of raw materials and product variations.
