Contact CamillaAntimicrobial resistance, AMR, is a growing public health problem both in Sweden and worldwide. We all need to help protect antibiotics. And it is urgent! RISE collaborates with companies, academia and the public sector, and we offer a variety of services linked to the work against antimicrobial resistance.
Antibiotics are one of our most important medicines. Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria develop resistance to antibiotics. The antibiotics become ineffective and the infections caused by the resistant bacteria become difficult to treat. For antibiotics to remain effective and for us to stop resistant bacteria, society as a whole must contribute. Everyone needs to be aware of the problem and act in a way that reduces the spread of infection and the need for antibiotics. We also have to secure access to existing antibiotics and use them wisely. Antibiotic resistance is part of the broader concept of antimicrobial resistance, which also includes the resistance of viruses, parasites and fungi to different types of antimicrobials.
RISE works against antibiotic resistance by participating in research and innovation that helps to:
We work broadly from a One Health perspective and we offer expertise in several areas.
The rapid spread of antibiotic resistance means that even simple infections can become difficult to treat with antibiotics. Increased access to new types of antibiotics and vaccines is crucial to ensure access to effective treatments against infections in the future.
We can help with the development of new antimicrobial treatments, from substance to drug.

Antibiotic resistance is not only a threat to human life and health, but also to important societal functions such as healthcare, pharmaceutical supply, food production, drinking water supply and wastewater management.
We lead and participate in a variety of collaborative projects with partners from industry, academia and the public sector. These range from the availability of existing antibiotics, to wastewater treatment, food and drinking water safety, validation of diagnostic tests, and the importance of community engagement.

Evaluating how well protective equipment, medical devices and other healthcare products resist dirt and prevent infections is crucial to ensure safety and quality for example in healthcare.
We offer everything from microbiological and biocompatibility tests to tests for bioburden, antimicrobial efficacy and sterility. By following standards such as ISO, ASTM, EN, USP and FDA, we ensure that the products fulfil the requirements for different applications.

Hygiene, cleaning and disinfection are key areas for preventing infections and the spread of infectious agents. This reduces the need for antibiotics, which is an important part of combating antibiotic resistance.
We offer services aimed at improving both hygienic standards and functional properties of products and processes at laboratory, pilot or full scale. This includes evaluation and development of products, technologies, materials, procedures and services.

Animal welfare and effective hygiene practices prevent the spread of microbial infections throughout the food system. This reduces the risk of infections and the need for antibiotic treatment in both animals and humans.
We offer a range of services related to challenges in food microbiology and farm animal health. We help assess microbiological risks in processes and products and we also carry out laboratory, pilot or full-scale tests, for example in laboratories.

Residues of antimicrobial agents and resistant microorganisms accumulate in our immediate environment, especially in water and air. These contaminants lead to both the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance. They can arise from different environments such as hospitals, agriculture, industries and households.
We offer different technologies for the remediation of air, water or surfaces. For example, filtration, UV treatment or chemical treatment, monitoring microbial contamination in the environment. We can also assist in evaluating the effectiveness of different technologies to remove bacteria and viruses, which is often required to certify a new product or technology for a market launch.

Antimicrobial materials, surfaces and coatings prevent infections and thus reduce the need for antibiotics. Antimicrobial materials are used in a variety of applications such as wound healing products, odourless clothing and marine anti-fouling. The development of new antimicrobial products requires expertise in several areas, such as material science, microbiology and regulations.
We offer development and evaluation of antimicrobial materials with a focus on safety and efficacy. We can also help evaluate the potential for a material or product to select for antimicrobial resistance.

Access to well-functioning analytical methods is important for mapping and detecting the occurrence and spread of antibiotic resistance and resistance genes. RISE has broad and deep expertise in microbiological analysis. We have access to a range of well-equipped microbiological labs where we work with a variety of techniques, from basic culture to DNA sequencing and advanced microscopy. We detect, quantify, characterise and identify different types of microorganisms, resistance genes and antibiotic resistance.
