Contact AndrewRust on vehicle bodywork, oxidation on PCBs, and corrosion on bridge components can be dangerous as well as expensive. The annual cost of corrosion on society amounts to approximately 4 percent of GDP. These costs are associated with corrosion protection and repairs when corrosion has progressed. Rust can pollute the environment and result in downtime and production losses in industries. Moreover, structures such as bridges and buildings may fail due to corrosion, which can entail considerable danger to people and the environment. Controlling corrosion is crucial in order to eventually achieve a circular and sustainable society by, for example, transitioning to renewable energy production. The utilisation of offshore wind power, for instance, is wholly dependent on preventing corrosion.
