Composite material characterisation
Polymer composite materials are attractive construction materials thanks to their high performance and low weight. In order to assure the desired properties and ensure quality, the composites must be characterized. Characterization of composite materials and their constituent materials is an Expertise at RISE.
Polymer composites consist of several different constituents: fibres, polymer, core material and filler material. Polymer composite materials can therefore be adapted for many different areas of use, with different requirements for the material, such as mechanical, thermal and chemical properties.
Due to the ability to tailor the properteis the material must be characterized based on many different design requirements.
RISE can help with characterization of the constituent materials as well as composites and products. The characterization can include many different methods such as:
- Microscopy
- Thermo gravimetric analysis, TGA
- Differential Scanning Calorimetry, DSC
- Rheology
- Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, DMTA
- Ultrasound
- Thermal expansion, CTE
- Moisture Expansion, CTM
- Mechanical testing
