Impact measurement to prioritze the right interventions

How do we know if a social investment yields the intended impact? Social investments aim to achieve outcomes like improved school performance, better, reduced loneliness, and safer neighborhoods. RISE can assist by scientifically measuring the effects of interventions, providing decision-makers with the best possible data for informed decisions.

To determine the impact of a particular intervention, careful analysis based on scientific methods is required. Many current initiatives are either not evaluated at all or are assessed using inadequate methods. An observed change, like increased school attendance, might not necessarily result from a specific intervention, as other factors could be responsible for the change. Often, methods currently used to measure effects struggle to differentiate between the impact of the specific intervention and other influencing reasons.

For the most accurate results, it's best to plan the evaluation before the intervention begins. However, if this is not possible, well-established methods can still be employed after the intervention has started, though they may not be as reliable. RISE offers comprehensive evaluations using the most appropriate methods to reliably measure the outcomes of interventions. Our expertise includes a wide range of quantitative methods, such as randomized controlled trials and other highly valid methods like propensity-score matching and difference-in-difference regressions. We also offer qualitative analysis, such as interviews, to complement the quantitative measurements.

The process may involve:

  1. Initial consultation: Discussion to understand the needs, goals, and the intervention or program to be evaluated.
  2. Description of the intervention: Mapping of theoretical causal relationships, identifying the likely effects of the intervention, including potential side effects. This step may include reviewing previous studies, expert interviews, and workshops.
  3. Data collection and study design: Selection of methods and planning for data collection, determining indicators to measure both intended and unintended effects. Depending on the case, we combine this with expertise in Questionnaire design to collect necessary data. The method chosen for evaluation depends on what is feasible but aims to provide the highest validity.
  4. Reporting and support: Presentation and interpretation of results, including effect size estimates and uncertainties, along with explanations of what these results mean for you. Reporting can be tailored, ranging from detailed reports to brief presentations based on your preferences.
