The National Laboratory for Mass

RISE is the National Metrology Institute of Sweden and is responsible, through its National Laboratories, for the fundamental measurement quantities in the International System of Units (SI).

At the National Laboratory for Mass, we work to maintain traceability for all weighing carried out in industries such as food, pharmaceutical, and manufacturing. Traceable measurements are essential to ensure that products are reliable and contain the correct amounts of, for example, food and medicine.

The foundation of the traceability chain is the Swedish national kilogram, which, despite the 2019 redefinition of the kilogram, is still used as a highly accurate reference standard. We are conducting research to develop a Kibble balance to realize the kilogram according to the latest definition in the future. We can calibrate weights ranging from 1 mg to 5 tons.

What do we do?

  • Maintain traceability in the field of mass
  • Calibrate weights according to the highest international standards (OIML R111-1, E1), as well as pressure weights and dead weights
  • Provide advice and training in the field of calibration for weighing applications
  • Conduct research and development, both nationally and in international collaboration projects
  • Participate in international comparison measurements to maintain the highest measurement quality
  • Contribute to standardization work
