The National Laboratory for Sound and Vibration

RISE is the National Metrology Institute of Sweden and is responsible, through its National Laboratories, for the fundamental measurement quantities in the International System of Units (SI).

At the National Laboratory for Sound and Vibration, we offer Sweden's most comprehensive and accurate resources for measurements and calibrations in the fields of sound and vibration. We continuously work to develop and improve measurement methods to meet the demand for traceable measurements from both industry and society, often in collaboration with other organizations through national and international research projects.

We work with quantities such as sound pressure, sound intensity, sound power, and acceleration. Both sound (dB) and vibration (m/s²) are derived quantities, which means that traceability is obtained from other quantities. For example, vibration is traceable to length and time.

What do we do?

Maintain traceability in sound and vibration
Quality-assured measurements and calibrations of sound level meters, sound calibrators, microphones, accelerometers, vibration transducers, tapping machines, and building acoustics loudspeakers etc.
Provide advice and technical expertise, such as in investigations of measurement needs or measurement quality in the field
Offer training in measurement and measurement uncertainty analysis
Conduct research and development, both nationally and in international research projects
Participate in international comparison measurements to maintain the highest measurement quality
Contribute to standardization
