Fibre optics and photonics at the heart of future technologies
Optical fibers and other photonic components form the backbone of the Internet and are essential to a wide range of applications. For example, they are used in automotive lidar systems, industrial manufacturing processes, advanced imaging, and healthcare diagnostics and treatment. Fiber optics can also be used as sensors to measure pressure, temperature and humidity in extreme or inaccessible environments.
At RISE, we offer unique laboratories and expertise for the development of fiber optic sensors, components and systems, as well as a fully equipped clean room for the development and production of specialty optical fibers. In photonics, we have particular expertise in micro-opto-electro-mechanical systems (MOEMS) and photonic integrated circuits (PIC) based on indium phosphide, silicon or silicon nitride. We also have expertise in related areas such as classical optics, laser technology, spectroscopy, quantum optics, and more.
