Concepts, demonstration and replication of local energy communities
The international research project CLUE aims to acquire knowledge on the optimized design, planning, and operation of local energy communities. Technical, economic and social aspects are investigated in the project for achieving an whole picture of opportunities and challenges.
Energy communities are considered as enabler and essential element of a sustainable and efficient energy system. To study the possibilities of local energy communities from an European context, the CLUE project was created and financed by the EU program ERA-Net Smart Energy Systems. Together with 24 partners from 4 European countries, RISE works to analyze and study local electricity systems and communities based on various aspects.
The Swedish cell of the project focuses on how the transmission capacity limits to Malmö can be mitigated with the help of demand-side flexibility. Together with the city of Malmö, E.ON, Lund University, Parkering Malmö, Vasakronan and Serneke, studies and demonstrations are carried out to investigate which flexibility potentials exist and how they can be realised. The interaction between DSO, electricity producers, property owners and service providers is of great importance here.
RISE's role in the project is to estimate the flexibility potentials at aggregate levels, and analyze different instruments that can be used to realize these potentials such as flexibility markets or dynamic tariffs. In addition, RISE leads a work package in the international project that focuses on the upscaling and replication of the various solutions that have been developed and demonstrated in Austria, Sweden, Germany and Scotland.
