Corrugated packaging

Research and technical development on corrugated board and packaging. The aims are to improve the performance and reliability of corrugated board and packaging through improved properties and relevant measurement methods as well as prediction of performance from properties.

Within the Bioeconomy Research Programme 2021–2024, Corrugated packaging will contribute to increased resource efficiency, reduced waste and in the end a strengthened position of sustainable paper-based packaging solutions on the market. The project addresses three important areas of corrugated packaging.

  • Improved creep resistance. Creep is a gradual increase of deformation over time which eventually will lead to the collapse of the corrugated packaging. It is especially important at high or varying humidity, where it may severely limit the packaging lifetime. The aim is to increase the creep resistance of fibres and papers by cross-linking and other means.
  • Packaging performance in transports. Both regular goods transports and e-commerce are considered. The aim is to predict mechanical performance, making it possible to optimise packaging and reduce overengineering (e.g. unnecessary large safety factors).
  • Predictable printability. Good print quality on packages gives a good first impression to the customer on the product’s quality. The aims within the project are to reduce stripiness of flexographic post-printing on corrugated board and to improve inkjet printability.
