Contact FereshtehCan we use recycled water for irrigation in Sweden, just like in so many other European countries?
In this project we examine the practical and safety aspects of irrigation with recycled water.
Water from Uppsala wastewater treatment plant is used to irrigate wheat and grass in controlled outdoor conditions. Thereafter, we observe the plants' health and growth, productivity and nutritional value, as well as the concentration of selected PFAS and pharmaceuticals in different parts of the plant. Additionally, we follow the soil health evolution during the experiment, and it's content for the same PFAS and pharmaceuticals.
Lastly, we observe the leach water quality, and estimate the change in the nutrients flow to natural water bodies, under the hypothesis of recycled water use for irrigation.
The project is funded by the JTI Foundation with co-financing from RISE.
