Lignin to replace fossil bitumen in roofing felt

Fossil based bitumen in roofing felt will be substituted by as much renewable odour free lignin as possible. The product quality of the roofing felt will at the same time remain or even be improved.

Roofing felt contains bitumen, a heavy oil fraction origination from fossil oil. Lignin has the potential to replace some part of this fossil raw material.

Lignin is an underutilized bio-raw material that has great potential and low carbon and environmental footprint.

The project will investigate which properties of the kraft lignin contribute to which properties of the roofing felt product, how this should be optimized to maximize bitumen substitution, and scale up the tests to demo scale with odour-reduced lignin.

The goal is to maximize bitumen replacement in roofing felt.
