RISE participates in an EU project that forms an extensive network of test facilities and innovation services for new technology and new products in building envelopes.

METABUILDING LABS' main goal is to simplify the innovation process for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the European construction sector and bring better products to market, strengthen competitiveness and increase the market impact of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the European construction sector.

The metabuilding.com platform will serve as the one-stop virtual point of contact, providing access to a powerful innovation systems service catalogue, including a wide network of testbeds enabling stakeholders to develop and test innovative systems and solutions for next-generation buildings.

METABUILDING LABS projects reach out to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as part of the project consortium representing the main stakeholder group and giving them access to Open Innovation Testbeds (OITB). By testing their innovations, SMEs are helped to tailor testing and related services to their specific needs, which promotes a system of high-value innovation support.

Access to the OITB helps to accelerate the innovation of SMEs and enables them to become more competitive with the major players in industry.

Within the project, at least nine Building Envelope Testbeds (O3BET) will be designed and built across Europe.  O3BET is a field testing building where innovative and standardized full-scale building systems will be able to be tested and examined under real conditions.

METABUILDING LABS IN NUMBERS:

  • 5-year project, 2021-01-01 to 2026-01-01
  • Hundreds of test sites and testbeds
  • 40 partners
  • Budget 16 344 557 EURO where of RISE 644 375 EURO
  • 13 countries

METABUILDING LABS' network of test sites will span the following countries:

BELGIUM, FRANCE, IRELAND, ITALY, LUXEMBOURG, POLAND, SPAIN, SWEDEN, TURKEY, GERMANY,     AUSTRIA, UNITED KINGDOM

METABUILDING LAB'S GOALS

  • Building a future-proof, upgradable, competitive, sustainable, and inclusive European innovation system for the construction sector and OITB networks.
  • Stimulate investment in innovative building envelope technologies by providing test beds for testing material and system performance.
  • Contribute to improving the technical and environmental quality of construction products by providing information on testbeds and innovation support to technology developers.
  • Unlocking the innovation potential of SMEs by providing access to prototyping, testing and certification services and infrastructures.
  • Investigate user acceptance and environmental requirements for products and co-developed solutions in Living Labs.

RISE's responsibility in the project is to work with quality assurance between the participating OITB and the construction of an O3BET, i.e., a field test building where innovative and standardized full-scale building systems will be able to be tested and investigated under conditions that are real for Sweden.

RISE is also responsible for collecting data for the service portfolio to be developed within the project. This service portfolio will include standardized and innovative services provided by the participating partners.  From this service portfolio, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the European construction sector can choose suitable services for their verification of products and designs.
