From Field to Building - F2B

Next Generation Building Material from Agricultural Waste

The proposed project aims to demonstrate the technical and financial feasibility of using the agricultural waste straw (otherwise burnt in fields) as a primary building material to create building components for prefabricated mid-sized residential and commercial construction.

F2B concept will integrate boards made of compressed straw into structural insulated panels (SIP) for applications in walls, floors, and roofs. Along with clear environmental benefits such as, reduction in field burning, reduced supply chain emissions involved in transportation, reduced steel and cement usage, reduced mining of raw materials and deforestation, the project focuses on resource efficiency by re-entering a massive waste flow into the life cycle in the building sector. Moreover, the project contributes to a socially sustainable affordable housing supply by leveraging cheap raw materials and off-site production with significantly low emissions associated with the deconstruction and disposal phase.
