Operational AI for Process Industry

Opera developed a cloud-based decision support system in real time for production planning and operation. The project demonstrates solutions to the stated challenges for commercial application of operational AI in the case of district heating and the district heating network.

Opera demonstrated that using machine learning one can estimate distribution time and supply temperature for a more constant high flow based on customer demand. By reducing the supply temperature at the plant, we can reduce heat loss, get more cogeneration, longer service life simpler materials (pipes), more efficiency and possibility to use the heat sources with low temperature level like recycling or geothermal.

Furthermore, a data-based methodology was developed, which can be used to estimate the time delays for different zones in the district heating network. Knowing the time delays in advance, the operators will have a better understanding about prediction of supply temperature.
