RECINA - Reuse of composite parts for infrastructure applications

The RECINA project focused on developing a bridge deck structure in which end-of-life glass fibre composite (GFRP) insulators were reused as base production material. This idea has the potential to address both the issue of sustainability in the management of GFRP waste, and also to reduce investment costs for new bridges.

There is a growing problem with the recycling of thermoset glass fiber composite (GFRP, FRP). Today, energy recovery (waste incineration and the cement industry) or landfill are the main processes used to manage GFRP reaching End-of-Life (EoL). None of these solutions are optimized to take advantage of the potential material resources.

Reuse in the infrastructure sector

One solution to this environmental problem is to develop new circular models for the reuse of EoL GFRP composites, as for instance construction elements for new pedestrian and bicycle bridges. There is a great potential to retain the intrinsic value of the composite structure and give it a "second life".

Focus on bridge decks from used insulators

The main challenge we were facing in the RECINA project was the variation in dimension and material properties in the waste stream, and how we could optimize its use in our bridge deck concept. To streamline and perhaps even take advantage of this variation, we needed to develop flexible concepts.

We have manufactured and tested mechanically a bridge deck concept from high-performance GFRP pipes.

Benefit to society and industry

Within the RECINA project, we have demonstrated the potential with circular use of GFRP composite materials. A demonstrator in the form of a bridge deck sandwich panel has been manufactured. Reducing the use of new raw materials, in line with the responsible use of materials in a sustainable society, is a priority goal. Our industrial partners from different parts of the value chain are very interested in finding new business opportunities in this area, and results that were produced within RECINA will provide the support they need.
