SafeTest - Safety and privacy protection when using test beds remotel

Real-time collaboration at a distance between research actors and companies and their customers in production and material-related test beds is becoming increasingly common. SafeTest was performed to support industrial actors who conduct measurements at a distance and where analysis of sensitive data is present.

The project addresses industrial actors who conduct measurements at a distance and where analysis of sensitive data is a prerequisite for product and production development.

SafeTest developed customized solution within cybersecurity and Privacy enhancing technologies (PET) in four industrial cases, which in different ways deal with security for individuals and how to collaborate in real time. The solutions will further be used as a basis for generalization in a form of an easy-to-use reference guide (“lathund”) for broad use in remote collaboration between testbeds and their customers.

Objectives

The goal was for external actors to be able to develop sustainable processes, a good working environment and material solutions by utilizing test beds remotely in real time with customized security solutions that protect sensitive data during analysis.

For each case in the project, a prototype of a security solution was developed, which generates knowhow that can be disseminated to a larger audience. The prototype solutions may strengthen the development and experience of digital tools and direct communication with individuals; something that will also increase in industry and business in the future.

The project includes four case studies:

1. Forming of sustainable products

This case is connected to RISE Stamping and forming center Olofström. A large proportion of the test operations are carried out in hydraulic presses and the project concerns safe real time sharing of the large amounts of sensor data generated during forming of various products. Manufacturing industries active in the network around the test bed in Olofström were involved in the work.

2. Digital application for experience exchange

Also RISE Test bed for sustainable composite production in Piteå is connected to partners throughout the country, both users of the new hydraulic press and companies in need of mechanical analyses. Experiences from previous remote connection to companies in Sweden are included and used to secure the data streams.

Both test beds have developed technology for remote connection which has been used during the pandemic. More companies, including SMEs with own innovative products and materials, are now interested in real time testing without traveling to Olofström or Piteå. The objective of the project was to propose encryption solutions that can be used for these collaborations remotely, involving data sharing and dialogue with industrial customers.

3. New function for data analysis and automatically tailored advice with AI (Prindit AB)

Prindit AB helps its customers with data needed to promote well-being, innovation and productivity. A new function was developed  for their software platform supporting the individual in a team, in contrast to current support that is usually implemented at group level. The new feature uses Explainable AI to analyze individual data. Based on the analysis, personalized reports and recommendations will be generated automatically. This may involve a plan for personal development, and advice for improving mental well-being or strengthening positive habits. The project will evaluate new security solutions connected to privacy.

4. Mutually secured user interfaces (AP&T)

AP&T develops solutions for sheet metal forming and complete production systems, independent presses, automation, and related aftermarket services. In this project AP&T  primarily worked  with servo press user interfaces, including requirements and specification of the systems, development of security solutions and verification of function and user-friendliness. In this case, data streams from and to the new press in Piteå are included.

Results anticipated

For each case in the project, a prototype security solution was suggested or developed, which generatet know-how that can be disseminated to a larger audience. The prototype solutions may strengthen the development and experience of digital tools and direct communication with individuals; something that will increase in industry and business in the future.

The project partners will co-create knowledge on how cybersecurity and privacy protection should be designed, which is summed up in a guide: "Data security and privacy protection in test beds".

Cybersecurity challenges addressed

  • Data security:  Company data and the person intended to share data with must be protected so that they are the only ones who have access to data.
  • Credibility: data must be credible, ie analysis of data and its presentation must be of high quality.
  • Privacy: IP and staff privacy linked to shared data must be secured. In industry, there are requirements for high traceability, for example in which machine and by whom a component is produced, but this data must be kept from misuse by someone else in the value chain.
