Stuck in the middle with you

Modvion develops, constructs and produces modular towers for wind turbines in renewable laminated spruce wood, this makes wind power both more competitive and environmentally friendly. The project "Stuck In the Middle With You” aims to further develop reliable processes for field-based gluing of joints between modules in Modvion's wooden towers. The goal is that the gluing processes should not be restrictive during the erection process for the tower, where four modules are erected and glued together so that they form a cylinder and then lifted on top of eachother. This means that the gluing, including preparations, must be able to be carried out in the same time as it takes to prepare the lifting of the next tower section. In order for Modvion to be able to prove that the wooden towers are competitive, the time for erection on site, and above all the time the erection crane is needed, must be minimized.

Carrying out gluing processes in the field is considered risky within the construction industry because it is difficult to guarantee the required conditions to achieve full approval quality, e.g. with regard to temperature and cleanliness. The gluing processes developed within the SIMWY project can be applied in other areas for wooden construction and to a greater extent enable efficient gluing in the field, thus the project contributes to a societal development with more demanding wooden constructions.

The project aims to develop one of the quality-critical sub-processes for gluing as well as process description for pre-assembly and joining of modules. The project also includes testing and certification of adhesives with the right properties for the specific processes and testing the strength of the adhesive in joints.
