SURFACE - characterisation for smart and efficient road lighting

How road surfaces reflect light is a physical characteristic that plays a key role in
the design of road lighting installations

Lighting systems in Europe are designed according to requirements in standards. The average luminance of the road surface shall be sufficient to detect obstacles on the road.

The requirements of the European standard are based on reference values published in an old scientific document. These data are outdated and not representative of current road surfaces, but they are still used to design lighting systems.

The purpose of the project is to provide to the EU standard organization new traceable reference data, representative of current road surfaces used in EU.

Results highlight advantages in using bright pavements as well the need for introducing systems for flux control in road lighting installation to compensate for the discrepancies between current reference data and actual road surface data.

The project is a Joint Research Project coordinated by INRiM, belonging to the European Metrology Research Programme for Innovation and Research (EMPIR) of the European Metrology Association of National Metrology Institutes (EURAMET).
