T.AI.TRÄ: Trollhättan's AI-based tree-invento

AI has great potential to improve the well-being of municipal residents and contribute to efficient and innovative processes in several different socially important areas. T.AI.TRÄ will help Trollhättan start its AI journey by investigating how AI can be used to inventory trees in the municipality.

AI has great potential to improve the well-being of municipal residents and contribute to efficient and innovative processes in several different socially important areas. It is therefore important for both municipalities and civil society organizations to start applying the technology in several areas. Using AI technology can create several different benefits and opportunities for the city of Trollhättan. AI can, for example, positively influence social and environmental problems in several different areas of operation and contribute to cost-effective municipal investments, from both a short-term and long-term strategic perspective.

With the help of AI technology, the project will be able to automate the studies of the municipality's trees in an efficient and reliable way. This will contribute to a better understanding of the municipality's green areas and enable a more sustainable management of its tree population.

For a municipality, there are several challenges that an AI-based tree inventory could help to manage in the long term:

A large population of trees in forest, park and urban environments is resource-intensive to inventory manually. Within the boundaries of a municipality, uncertainty often arises about who owns and is responsible for individual trees. Different owners can be private individuals, municipal administrations, private industry, government authorities, church communities, foundations and housing associations. By determining the species of trees during an inventory, it becomes clear which species are, if any, overused and which are needed to create a resilient population, which contributes to a municipality's green space planning. Species knowledge combined with measurements of tree trunks and crowns can help to calculate monetary values as well as the value of the climate-supporting ecosystem services that individual trees contribute.
