Fire testing according to ISO 5658-2 evaluates a material's ability to withstand a fire spreading along its surface. The method is used to classify materials for trains and is referred to by EN 45545-2 - Railway applications - Requirements for fire behaviour of materials and Components.
When we take the railway, we assume that the journey will be comfortable and safe. Fire safety is important in order to save lives in the event of an accident. Therefore, all materials and products installed in trains and subways must be fire tested according to EN 45545-2. The system has been developed by Technical Committee CEN/TC 256 ”Railway applications” at the request of the European Commission. The system is based on requirements from EU Directive 2016/797. All contradictory national standards are revoked.
The specimen is inserted in the specimen holder together with a substrate. It is vertically positioned during the test and is exposed to heat radiation from a radiation panel. The test is conducted with a pilot flame. The time is noted when the specimen is ignited as well as when the flame reaches each of the 50 mm stations along the specimen centre line. Other parameters that are notes are the time to flame out of the flame front on the center line, the burnt length and any occurrence of burning droplets.
A test report, in Swedish or English, is delivered with the test results after testing.
