Safety of toys – Chemical, mechanical and physical properties
To ensure that children's toys are safe to use, a wide range of rules and regulations are in place. Among the most comprehensive frameworks is the Toy Safety Directive (2009/48/EC), supplemented by harmonized standards. The directive sets requirements for toy safety, including chemicals, flammability, general safety, and electrical safety.

Purpose
All toys sold within the EU must bear the CE mark. To achieve this, the toy must meet the requirements of the Toy Safety Directive. The products are tested according to harmonized standards to ensure that these requirements are met.
We perform testing of toys in accordance with the SS-EN 71 series, the REACH Regulation, the RoHS Directive, and other relevant regulations.
The requirements in the standards vary depending on which age group the toy is intended for and what type of toy it is.
Methods
Accredited testing according to the SS-EN 71 series and assessments according to the REACH Regulation and RoHS Directive
We offer accredited testing according to the following standards:
- SS-EN 71-1 – Mechanical and physical properties
Tests the toy’s safety against mechanical hazards such as small parts, sharp edges, and durability during normal use. - SS-EN 71-2 – Flammability
Evaluates the toy’s flammability characteristics to minimize the risk of the product igniting easily or contributing to a fire. - SS-EN 71-3 – Migration of certain elements
Tests whether heavy metals and other regulated substances migrate from the toy in hazardous amounts when in contact with saliva, sweat, or gastric acid.
In addition to these accredited tests, we also offer assessments and analyses to ensure compliance with:
- REACH Regulation
Lead and cadmium. - RoHS Directive
Assesses whether electrical and electronic toys meet the requirements for restricting hazardous substances such as lead, mercury, and cadmium.
These services are performed according to harmonized standards to ensure that products meet all applicable safety requirements within the EU.
Our operations include both accredited and non-accredited testing methods. The scope of accreditation is available upon request – please contact us for more information.
