Double Bio Melt spun textile fibres

DoubleBio - Biobased and biodegradable textiles

The project DoubleBio aims to develop a textile fibre which is biobased and biologically degradable in sea and land.

The fibre will be especially suitable for use in nonwoven single-use textiles such as agricultural textiles, packaging, wet wipes, nappies and face masks.

Textile single-use products are rarely recycled into new materials as they are both, difficult to collect and complicated to wash before recycling. Moreover, such products are generally based on non-degradable fossil-based polymers such as polypropylene and polyester. In Sweden, single-use textiles largely end up in energy recycling, whereas landfill is a more common method for waste management in many European countries [1]. Some of the waste products end up in sewers or in the environment.

In this project, we aim to develop a textile material where the typically fossil-based raw material is replaced by biobased raw materials. Moreover, we aim to make the textile compostable to avoid littering and microplastics.
