The graduate school ASSURE - Adaptation of urban Space through SUstainable Regeneration

Today's cities face major challenges. Our cities must be developed to be able to deal with the effects of climate change, reduce the climate impact of cities, remove segregation, and solve the housing shortage - to take on some of the challenges. But the city of today will be mostly the city of tomorrow. We must therefore learn to renovating, transforming, and managing the exiting build environment.

The graduate school ASSURE - Adaptation of urban Space through Sustainable Regeneration - will develop new knowledge about sustainable renovation and conversion of buildings, and neighborhoods. The graduate school is founded by the Swedish research council Formas and will finance ten doctoral projects during 2023 – 2028 that, in close cooperation with the construction and real estate industry, will develop practical knowledge about sustainable renovation and transformation of properties, neighborhoods and areas.

The graduate school is a run by Lund University/LTH, Malmö University, Uppsala University, Campus Gotland and RISE, who also coordinate the graduate school.

A network of partners is affiliated with ASSURE. The network includes four property companies: Framtidskoncernen, Stena Fastigheter, Vasakronan and HSB Malmö, Krook & Tjäder Architects and Structor Project Management Malmö AB. Two governmental authorities also participate in the network: the Housing Authority and the Swedish National Antiquities Authority. The network also includes the Eurac Research Institute for Renewable Energy as an international partner.

Two broad regional networks for the construction and real estate industry: Center for Management in the construction sector at Chalmers and Center for Real Estate Entrepreneurship at Malmö University are also connected to the research school. The networks will contribute with research questions and concrete challenges that can be linked to the doctoral students' thesis projects.
