How Reporters Without Borders is upgrading its cybersecurity mindset
More and more journalists are exposed to threats and hatred, often via social media - at the same time, the journalism profession is a prerequisite for press freedom, freedom of expression and democracy. The organisation Reporters Without Borders saw a great need for increased cybersecurity in the profession, and enlisted the help of the Centre for Cybersecurity at RISE.
Freedom of expression is one of the most important rights we have. Reporters Without Borders (RSF Sweden) is a global organisation that has existed in Sweden since 1994 and is one of the most important actors in the world for issues of freedom of expression and press freedom. The organisation works for independent media and fights for individual journalists who are hindered in their work. They give lectures in schools, award press freedom prizes, write reports on current affairs and much more.
Increased threat level for journalists
Recently, threats and hatred against journalists have increased nationally and globally. Many of them are imprisoned for unclear reasons. Increasing the security of journalists has therefore been high on the agenda.
RISE is part of the cybersecurity journey
This is why Reporters Without Borders chose to scale up the work on cyber security together with RISE. During the autumn, some 30 journalists were trained in a niche cyber security course by experts at the Centre for Cyber Security.
Independence important
Since Reporters Without Borders works for independent media and journalists, it was important to find an independent partner such as RISE. This, together with the fact that RISE possesses interdisciplinary expertise in social issues and a scientific basis, was both a strength and security.
More training opportunities for cyber security
In addition to courses, RISE also offers customised exercises in the Cyber Range, a test bed where companies and organisations can ensure that procedures, organisation and technology work optimally. This makes the Cyber Range a good training arena for cyber security.
Continued cooperation in cyber security
Cybersecurity is a complex topic that requires time to get to grips with. Therefore, Reporters Without Borders hopes to continue and develop its collaboration with RISE. The need for knowledge in cyber security is high, and with continued collaboration, Reporters Without Borders hopes to strengthen both the organisation and individual journalists, so that they can continue to deliver journalism of the best quality in a safe way.
