Torben is a researcher at RISE and works with microscopy and microstructure analysis. He is an expert in electron microscopy and member of the LSRI project at RISE (LSRI: large scale research infrastructures) that aims towards making synchrotron and neutron facilities like MAX IV and ESS more accessible for industry and academia. Torben has worked with both hard materials (like catalytic nanoparticles, porous oxide materials) and soft materials (for example food ingredients, cellulose, pharmaceuticals, packaging materials).
Some of Torben's areas of expertise are:
- Transmission electron microscopy (TEM)
- Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and focused ion beam SEM (FIB-SEM)
- Cryo electron microscopy
- Tomography
- Sample preparation for electron and X-ray microscopy, for example ion milling with FIB-SEM, plastic embedding and staining, thin slicing with ultramicrotomy, freeze fracturing, plunge freezing
- Scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM)
- X-ray fluorescence (XRF) microscopy
- Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM)
- Light microscopy
