Testbed for atmospheric corrosion testing

Corrosion testing under field conditions is important to be able to obtain real and relevant data on material life and degradation in different type of environments. For atmospheric corrosion, this can be done by exposing test panels or industrial products in real environments and then evaluating the corrosion using standardised methods.

Atmospheric corrosion testing can be performed for metals, paint systems and finished products used in, for example, infrastructure, construction, marine environments and the automotive industry to examine its resistance to a specific environment. Corrosion testing can also be performed to meet society's / industry's need to know how corrosion changes over time due to the impact on climate and the environment. Produced data can also be used to verify results from accelerated corrosion tests in corrosion chambers (for more information see Testbed accelerated corrosion testing).

Corrosion testing in different environments

Within Test bed for atmospheric corrosion testing, it is possible to perform corrosion testing in different environments such as marine-, rural-, UV / sand abrasion- and subarctic atmosphere. This means that there are test beds in different types of environments that represent different corrosivity classes. There are six corrosivity classes according to EN ISO 9223 which include very low corrosivity (C1), low corrosivity (C2), medium corrosivity (C3), high corrosivity (C4), very high corrosivity (C5) and extreme corrosivity (CX).

The corrosivity class is determined annually for the materials carbon steel, zinc, copper and aluminum for all of our field stations that are included in the Test Bed for atmospheric corrosion testing. Environmental data such as air temperature, humidity, precipitation, concentration of SO2 and chloride deposition in accordance with EN ISO 8565 are measured monthly and reported in annual reports.

Our field stations

RISE offers atmospheric exposures on field stations in Sweden (Bohus-Malmön, Kristineberg, Ryda Kungsgård (Uppland) and Gällivare), France (Brest) and the United Arab Emirates (Dubai) with the following corrosivity categories.

RISE offers assembly of samples as well as evaluation during and after the end of exposure according to the request of the customer. The most common approach is to expose flat samples in 45 ° South and rain-protected in 90 ° North in accordance with EN ISO 8565. At the largest test beds, ie Kvarnvik and Kattesand, it is also possible to assemble your own samples or products and evaluate their performance at your chosen interval.

There are no restrictions on the size of the products and advanced systems can be advantageously exposed at these test beds. Another advantage is the opportunity to expose samples at different test stations, and thereby different corrosivity classes, which enable an assessment of the product's durability at the different classes.

You are welcome to contact us to discuss the best approach to atmospheric corrosion testing as of your needs.
