This course gives you an introduction to battery technology. You will learn about different ageing mechanisms and state estimators, such as State-of-Charge (SoC) and State-of-Health (SoH). We explore battery safety and review the importance of a well-functioning Battery Management System (BMS) to ensure a safe and reliable battery system. Further, we explain how safety functions, implemented via control systems, are related to the system-wide risk analysis at battery level. The course also includes a short introduction to the functional safety standard IEC 61508 and ISO 13849, their terminology and definition.
The aim of the course is for participants to understand why it is necessary to implement safety-related functions in the BMS and which standards to use to do so. You will also gain an understanding of how battery safety depends on usage and ageing as well as understand the importance of BMS for safe and sustainable batteries.
The course is aimed at engineers interested in learning about ageing mechanisms, state estimators and safety for batteries. The course is aimed at engineers working at a technical level with batteries and needing in-depth knowledge of why certain functions in BMS need to be safety-classified.
