Image analysis is a research field that aims to extract meaningful information from digital images or videos. It involves various steps such as capturing, processing, analyzing and interpreting visual data. Image analysis can be used to solve many real-world problems in different domains, such as climate change, ecology, and biodiversity.

At RISE, we conduct state-of-the-art research in image analysis incorporating the latest state-of-the-art methods such as deep convolutional neural networks and attention based architectures. We apply our expertise to various application areas, such as:

• Monitoring and predicting the effects of climate change on natural and human systems
• Understanding and preserving the diversity and dynamics of ecosystems and species
• Developing and evaluating solutions for environmental and societal challenges

We also explore the challenges and opportunities of using AI for image analysis, including questions about things such as data availability, annotation cost, explainability, human-AI collaboration, and privacy protection.

Some of the topics that we work on include:

• Detecting and measuring changes in land cover, vegetation, and water resources
• Identifying and classifying plants, animals, and habitats
• Analyzing multimodal data, such as images in combination with text, audio, etc.
• Devloping data efficient approaches to leverage the most of available data sources
