Innovation systems

Innovation is an obvious and essential part of a society's development. And the key to a successful innovation is a functional innovation system, i.e., the complex interactions between technology, information, knowledge, people, organisations, market and policy that together makes it possible for an innovation to affect the society.

  • RISE offers tools and support to understand and facilitate complex relationships involved in the development of sustainable innovation and transitions.
  • RISE process leaders and analysts have a broad and scientifically based expertise in innovation systems perspectives.
  • RISE is an independent player in the middle of the Swedish innovation system that works with both research and practice.

The understanding of innovation systems has developed rapidly since the 1980s. The concept of innovation systems is about understanding the interactions turning an idea into an innovation with societal impact. An innovation systems perspective sheds light on the interaction and relationships between different components and activities that together prevent or enable the development of a certain innovation. By focusing on the connections between parts of a system, rather than the individual parts, we can gain new insights into how a system behaves and can be affected.

What is an innovation system perspective?

An innovation systems perspective is often based in a specific technology, technological innovation or service, such as batteries, hydrogen-powered vehicles and mobility. It can also be based on a specific societal challenge or mission, such as that Sweden's food production should have a net zero climate footprint in 2045, be defined by a specific sector, such as the construction sector, or be defined in relation to geographical terms (i.e., city, region or nation).

RISE’s expertise in innovation systems is based on scientific frameworks ranging from national and industrial perspectives to hands on processes for change involving specific actors. Some of the frameworks we use are: Multi-Level Perspective (MLP); Technological Innovation Systems (TIS); Transition Management (TM); Mission-oriented Innovation Systems (MIS); and Organisational Innovation Systems (OIS). Our work usually focuses on understanding cross-sectoral and complex relationships in relation to the development and the diffusion of innovation. With an increased understanding of the innovation system, the conditions for proactively contributing to new practices, logics and technologies are improved.
