Mechanical pulping

Are you looking for energy efficient pulp production or improved bulk in your board grade? RISE could be your helping hand.

RISE has extensive experience in product development and material or product testing. Some of the reference projects are in the following areas:

  • Product strength and bulk improvement
  • Improved paper/board formation and surface
  • Energy reduction
  • Chemical utilization
  • Optimized pre-treatment
  • Improved bleaching
  • Handling of extractives
  • Process and product stability
  • Production capacity improvements
  • Raw material quality measurements

Depending on the improvement need, RISE offers solutions that are spread from laboratory scale to application implementation at mill site. RISE offers custom made solutions and piloting opportunity.

Looking at different process stages, following solutions could be offered:

  • Control of raw material – choice of raw material, quality of raw material
  • Improved Pre-treatment – wood chips, mechanical and chemical
  • Impregnation – choice of chemicals, uptake improvement, impregnation time
  • Optimized refining (HC/LC)– refiner operations, parameter settings and segments, bleaching in refiner
  • Process water – chemical cost reduction, production cost reduction, effluent control
  • Pulp washing
  • Pulp bleaching

ABOUT MECHANICAL PULPING

Mechanical pulping is one of the key operations in many production processes within the pulp and paper industry. Product categories that may use mechanically treated pulp is

  • Printing paper grades
  • Packaging board grades
  • MDF (medium density fibreboard)
  • 3D formed product (wet- or dry moulded)
  • Fibre composites and others.

Examples of different pulping processes that are used for making suitable fibre and pulp grades are as following:

  • Ground wood (GW/SGW/PWG)
  • Refiner mechanical pulp (RMP)
  • Thermomechanical pulp (TMP)
  • Chemi-mechanical pulp (CTMP/CMP)
  • High Temperature - chemi-mechanical pulp (HT-CTMP)
  • Bleached Chemi-thermomechanical pulp (BCTMP)
  • Alkaline Peroxide Mechanical Pulp (APMP)

The raw material, wood fibre, that is used varies depending on the final product and production site location. However, both hard wood (HW) and soft wood (SW) are used as wood chips or fibre suspension.

Some of the process operations included in the mechanical pulping are:

  • Pre-treatment (chemical or mechanical)
  • Refining (High consistency, Low consistency)
  • Pulp washing
  • Pulp bleaching

The process operations vary depending on product grade and final product requirements.
