Press forming for 3D-packaging

The need for sustainable packaging and single-use products is increasing in both the market and in the society. The need to utilize the resource efficient paper production and to form these 2-dimensional substrates into attractive 3-dimensional packaging and products are large.

RISE has competences across tee complete production chain for the technology area of press forming. RISE has competences within most of the deformation techniques (such as embossing, press forming, deep drawing and hydroforming) in order to go from 2D to 3D and thereby utilize the great production capacity of paper machine manufacturing.

The interest for complex structures with more or less stretchable paper qualities and attractive embossed structures are increasingly important for brand owners not at least within the replacement of plastics in packaging (such as champagne and perfumes etc.) and single-use products (such as inserts, dinner plates etc.).

RISE can offer development projects by the utilization and the understanding of the complete and complex production system, from

  • Best fibre source and processing; to
  • Drying strategies; tool
  • Production and design of tooling’s; to
  • Measurement and simulation of the finished product

And hence put the properties and manufacture in relation to its use and demand.

We offer specific projects (from bilateral assignments to larger multilateral research projects) tailored towards your needs.

We can help you with characterisation of mechanical properties of paper, paperboard and corrugated board, but with our knowledge in material mechanics and structural mechanics we can also offer experimental and theoretical analysis of the effects of the mechanical properties in converting processes and in packaging.

We develop and improve experimental methods for paper materials, converting processes and packaging within our multilateral research projects but also in bilateral projects to be able to address and solve problems the industry has. We work with physically based models to analyse the relations between material properties and the structural mechanics.
