The focus lies on regenerating polyester and polyurethane to promote a non-toxic environment and realize resource-efficient production of sustainable materials for the textile industry.
In this project, polyester and polyurethane (PU) will be chemically separated from a blended waste stream, and then both fractions will be depolymerized into monomers. The resulting monomers will be regenerated into their virgin polymers and used for textile applications, creating the possibility of closed-loop monomer recycling of this waste.
As an integral part of the project, in alignment with the Swedish government’s aim for a non-toxic environment, chemical risks will be assessed alongside other environmental issues like climate change and eutrophication potential for each step. The environmental benefits and costs associated with the implementation of this recycling process will be examined through LCA.
