Lignin

Electrochemical depolymerization of lignin into specialty chemicals

Paper and pulp industry generates several million tons of lignin annually. Currently, a large part of the lignin is burned as a low-value fuel, but it can also be valorized for applications such as plywood resins, insulating materials, and paper lamination. By valorizing the lignin, fossil coal can be replaced with green, sustainable alternatives.

Interest in electrochemical conversion methods where lignin is valorized is increasing. Mild reaction conditions and increased environmental friendliness are highlighted as two advantages of these methods. This project aims to develop a concept where lignin is valorized into a phenol-rich mixture that may be interesting for applications such as specialty chemicals. The lignin will be broken up using electrochemical methods and then stabilized via a mild hydrogen treatment. A desired result is to develop a sustainable product that is relevant to the chemical industry.
