From the horse's mouth: biodiversity in future mobility

In urban environments, biodiversity is important for the stability and functioning of ecosystems. However, urbanisation and the increasing use of hard surfaces for mobility are reducing biodiversity. We need to strike a balance between mobility on the one hand and the preservation and expansion of green spaces on the other.

In this project, we will therefore use speculative design prototypes in the form of ecological mobility corridors to show what a future could look like if nature and animals are part of urban mobility. A future as it might look if animals and nature were allowed to have a say. The project, which is a collaboration between RISE and Sollentuna Municipality, will involve residents, experts and municipal officials to promote awareness and dialogue about the important role of urban biodiversity. Using foresight methodology and speculative design, the project will explore the intersection of mobility, biodiversity and human-nature communication.

The project is carried out in three stages. By analysing the world around us and using foresight methodology, we create a future scenario that we then translate into an experience-based future prototype using speculative design. Finally, we disseminate the future prototype and gather insights from those who test the experience.
