Contact Tor BjörnProject to reduce energy consumption for cooling and achieve high energy efficiency in data centres.
Objective
This project aims to develop a holistic cooling approach to promote sustainability in the global computing and communication infrastructure of the Metaverse. The goal is to reduce energy consumption for cooling and achieve high energy efficiency in data centres.
Content
The project focuses on implementing holistic cooling control by synchronising server fans and facility fans to reduce energy consumption and achieve record low ISO PUE values. It includes studies of server operational sweet spots and implementation of technical knowledge in a 500-kW data centre.
Methodology
By using wind tunnels, precisely controlled environments are created to investigate servers and their operational sweet spots. The project focuses on OCP servers and leverages available data and interfaces to control the server fans and optimise the overall energy efficiency of data centre operations.
Impact
By applying the holistic cooling approach, the project is expected to deliver the following impacts:
- Guidance for data centre operators, cooling service providers and server manufacturers on holistic equipment control, facility control and IT workload balancing to reduce energy demand.
- Demonstration of energy-efficient operation of holistically air-cooled data centres with results from the Horizon 2020 project.
- Contributing to increased sustainability and energy efficiency in global Metaverse infrastructure by reducing energy consumption for cooling and promoting the use of OCP servers.
We aim to make significant progress on sustainability in the Metaverse infrastructure by optimising cooling systems and reducing energy consumption. By promoting holistic cooling control and developing guidelines and demonstrations, we hope to inspire a more energy efficient and environmentally friendly future for the digital world.
