paperChain

The PaperChain project will use an industrial symbiosis model centered on the use of various waste streams generated by the European pulp and paper industry, as a valuable raw material for three industrial sectors: the construction sector, the mining sector and the chemical industry.

Various waste streams are produced as a result of the pulp and paper industry's manufacturing processes to produce paper, board and other cellulose-based products.

PaperChain works with the valorisation of the pulp and paper industry's waste streams. The project focuses on the waste streams that mainly worked with landfill, such as causticizing residues, and those that are produced in large quantities, such as sludge or ash. Only boiler and furnace ash have been discarded due to the low technical performance of construction applications and their potential for fertilizers. This is in favor of recycled paper ash, which is much more promising for the construction sector.

The project will demonstrate the valorisation of the pulp and paper industry's waste streams in three different ways: without modifications, minimal processing and during any treatments.

Project goals:

- To design a baseline for the circular economic models around the paper and pulp industry and selected sectors.

- To validate the sustainability of the circular economy models.

- To implement valorization processes on an industrial scale.

- To implement certification processes, training and guidelines for the recycled solutions.

- To demonstrate the circular models on a real scale in four EU countries.

- To develop marketing strategies, development paths and ensure replication.

RISE part of the project:

RISE part of the project will be carried out by RISE Processum. RISE Processum will participate in two of five demonstration sub-projects.

The focus is on demonstration of the value chain from a fiber residual stream to Ethyl Chloride with a focus on the chemical conversion of ethanol to ethyl chloride which is carried out in a continuous demonstration plant. Ethyl chloride is intended to be used as a component in the chemical industry. The continued work will include the development of dissolving cellulose towards a quality that is suitable for applications in the field of cellulose ethers / esters.

The second focus is on using green liquor sludge from the pulp industry as a functional additive in the waterproofing layer when finishing mining waste. RISE Processum leads the work of designing and establishing a demonstration area in the mining industry. The purpose is to prevent oxidation of mining waste and in the long run emissions of unwanted environmental toxins
