Emission measurement from construction products, paint and furnish

It is important that building materials and other products that we have in an indoor environment do not emit harmful substances into the air. With an emission measurement, we analyze which volatile substances (VOC) a material emits in to the air. We can determine the total content of VOC (TVOC) and individual substances such as formaldehyde.

Purpose

In our emission chambers, we can test whether your material meets various emission requirements set by, among others Byggvarubedömningen, CARB/EPA, IKEA, BSL (F****), RTS (M1), Svanen, BREEAM och LEED.

We have many years of experience in emission measurements and we can help with what needs to be tested for your specific needs.

Method

An emission measurement means that the test material is placed in an emission chamber with a constant temperature, humidity and air circulation. The air in the chamber is tested a number of days after the start of the test, usually 28 days.

There are several different standardized methods we can perform:

  • EN 16516 Construction products – Assessment of release of dangerous substances - Determination of emissions into indoor air

ISO 16000-series:

  • ISO 16000-9 Indoor air - Part 9: Determination of the emission of volatile organic compounds from building products and furnishing — Emission test chamber method
  • ISO 16000-10 Indoor air - Part 10: Determination of the emission of volatile organic compounds from building products and furnishing — Emission test cell method
  • ISO 16000-3 Indoor air Part 3: Determination of formaldehyde and other carbonyl compounds in indoor air and test chamber air – Active sampling method

Other methods:

  • EN 717-1 Wood based panels – Determination of formaldehyde release – Part 1: Formaldehyde emission by chamber method

  • ISO 12460-3 Wood based panels – Determination of formaldehyde release – Part 3: Gas analysis method

  • Standard Method for the Testing and Evaluation of Volatile Organic Chemical Emissions from Indoor Sources using Environmental Chambers, by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH)

  • IOS-MAT-0003 Formaldehyde requirements of wood, wood-based and wood-like natural materials and products

  • IOS-MAT-0181 Formaldehyde requirements of wood-based materials comprised in the German Prohibition of Chemicals Ordinance

We are an approved third-party certifier for the control of formaldehyde emission from wood-based boards in accordance with the EPA TSCA Title VI and CARB ATCM 93120 regulations. Emission methods used are:

  • ASTM E1333 Standard Test Method for Determining Formaldehyde Concentrations in Air and Emission Rates from Wood Products Using a Large Chamber
  • ASTM D6007 Standard Test Method for Determining Formaldehyde Concentration in Air from Wood Products Using a Small-Scale Chamber.

We perform F****-testning and certification according to Japanese BSL (Building Standard Law) of formaldehyde emission from building products. We are approved by MLIT (Ministry of Land, Infrastucture and Transport). Emission methods used are Japanese Industrial Standards and Agricultural Standards, for example:

  • JIS A 1460 Building boards Determination of formaldehyde emission – Desiccator method
  • JIS A 1901 Determination of the emission of volatile organic compounds and aldehydes for building products – Small chamber method

We are also approved by The Building Information Foundation RTS in Finland to perform emission tests according to the M1 Emission Classification of Building Materials: Protocol for Chemical and Sensory testing of Building Materials.

Other methods for the determination of formaldehyde:

  • VdL-RL 03 Richtlinie zur Bestimmung der Formaldehydkonzentration in wasserverdünnbaren Dispersionsfarben und verwandten Produkten - Bestimmung der freien in-can Formaldehyd-konzentration mit der Acetylaceton-Methode)
  • EN ISO 14184-1 Textiles – Determination of formaldehyde – Part 1: Free and hydrolysed formaldehyde (water extraction method)

VOC content according to:

  • ISO 11890-2 Paints and varnishes - Determination of volatile organic compound (VOC) content – Part 2 Gas-chromatographic method
  • US EPA Method 24

Multiple Volvo Car Corporation Standards, for example:

  • VCS 1027, 2749/STD 429-0003 - Bestämning av organiska emissioner från icke-metalliska material i fordonskupéer
  • VCS 1027, 2739/STD 429-0002 – Bestämning av formaldehydemission från detaljer i fordonskupéer

Deliveries

When we perform an emission measurement, you get a test report. Depending on the measurement made, the report can be used as a basis for certification or approval by different requirements.
