Master’s Thesis; Interaction Design and Emerging Technologies to Support Learning
Background
Ongoing changes in society and Swedish industry have created a growing need for skill development. RISE is conducting a project aimed at exploring how artificial intelligence (AI) and new interaction design technology can support users in their learning. In collaboration with industry companies, including for instance the automotive industry and manufacturing industry, the project investigates new tools that simplify learning and aid in the use and operation of products and services.
By using advanced data driven techniques, such as AI, and new interaction technologies like Extended Reality (XR), there is an opportunity to create more effective, intuitive learning support for users. For instance, a machine operator could use voice interaction to receive precise guidance on various tasks while benefiting from intuitive XR-based visualizations. However, it’s important to better understand how these human-system interfaces can be designed. How should interaction be designed to align with human roles, needs, and capabilities? By developing design concepts and prototypes that are tested with users across different fields, we can build this knowledge.
A prioritized use case for the thesis is to design and evaluate a prototype user interface that simplifies learning about new vehicle functions. Electrification and digitalization in vehicles have created a situation where drivers need better support in understanding optimal handling and usage. This work will be conducted in cooperation with one of the automotive manufacturers RISE collaborates with. Depending on the student’s background and interests, there may also be opportunities to work with use cases in other areas where RISE is involved, such as in a case within the manufacturing or process industries.
About the thesis work
We are currently seeking 1-3 students interested in completing their thesis project in spring 2025.
In the master’s thesis project, students will focus on designing interactions between humans and systems through a user-centered approach. Based on a selected use case, the key objectives are:
- User Needs Assessment: Conduct an initial analysis of user needs related to learning within the context and explore potential technologies for interaction.
- Design Concepts Development: Develop design concepts for human-technology interaction that facilitate effective learning, with a focus on possibilities in emerging technologies.
- Prototype and Evaluation: Implement prototypes using a platform like Figma, Unity, or XR tools, and evaluate their impact on learning through a user test.
Terms
Location: Our offices are located in Piteå, and there is an opportunity to conduct the project on-site. Depending on the student’s place of residence, it may also be possible to carry out the project entirely or primarily remotely.
Scope: 30 hp
Start date: January 2025
Compensation: Compensation will be paid on satisfactory oral and written thesis defence.
Who Are You?
As an applicant, you should be curious to explore new technology, human behaviour and interaction design. You are currently pursuing a master’s degree in interaction design, cognitive ergonomics, systems engineering or a related field.
About us
