Battery safety in focus - new conference fills a critical gap

25 March 2025, 08:16

On March 19, RISE brought together hundreds of industry leaders, battery experts, engineers and researchers from Europe and the US to discuss and share insights on battery safety progress, research and challenges.

The widespread electrification of society makes battery safety a more important topic than ever. Clear policies and strategies are needed to achieve sustainable development. Implementing these policies and strategies, focusing on safety throughout the battery value chain, creates long-term resilience and trust.

Last week, industry, entrepreneurs and academia gathered for The Battery Safety Conference in Gothenburg. This was the world premiere of a battery conference with a well-spoken focus on battery safety. At the conference, leading experts shared knowledge and experience on everything from battery safety in the development- and manufacturing phase to use and second use. The day's presentations covered topics such as regulations, standards, thermal runaway, sustainable battery recycling and battery management systems (BMS).

Keynote speakers were Victoria Lutz, The Fire Protection Research Foundation (FPRF) and Roberto Pacios, CIC energiGUNE.

Roberto Pacios says:

“The Battery Safety Conference organized by RISE was a unique opportunity to gather stakeholders along the value chain of batteries, from materials researchers to end users and policymakers.  A key takeaway was the importance of sharing knowledge from all the different points of view and the need to cooperate in implementing new approaches that can help mitigate risks and increase safety in the production, handling and use of batteries for different applications.”

Other speakers were Judith Jeevarajan, UL Research Institutes, Tom Hessels, Netherlands Institute for Public Safety, NIPV, Annika Ahlberg Tidblad, Volvo Cars, Martin Svensson, Epiroc Electrification Solutions, Roeland Bisschop, Volvo Energy, Elna Heimdal Nilsson, Lund University, Kenneth Ekman, , Fortum Battery Recycling, Frederic Schuh, Daimler Truck AG and Leo Svenningsson, Ellen Scott, Ingvar Karlson, Maria Quant and Ola Willstrand from RISE.

“We are extremely proud to have offered a conference highlighting the critical safety issues in the battery industry. The broad interest and high level of discussion shows that this issue is engaging and needs continued focus,” says Claudia Nilsson, Head of Communication Safety and Transport at RISE.

The Battery Safety Conference will return in 2026.
