RISE and Intel Collaborate to Develop Sustainable Data Centre Technologies

13 December 2023, 08:01

The strategic collaboration will help develop sustainable solutions for heat removal from integrated circuits by air and liquid cooling.

RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, a leading research institute and innovation partner is pleased to announce a new collaboration with Intel, a world leader in the design and manufacturing of essential technologies that power the cloud and an increasingly smart, connected world. Intel is entering into a collaboration with RISE data centre systems technologies, joining collaborators such as Meta, Ericsson, Vattenfall, ABB, LTU, Vertiv and BP Castrol.

The data centre research at RISE is based in Luleå, Sweden, and RISE is owned by the Swedish state and supported by EU and national funds. Collaborating with universities, industry and the public sector, RISE performs industrial research and innovation, with the overall objective to support sustainable growth by strengthening industry competitiveness and ability to be in the forefront.

Through the collaboration with RISE, Intel will specifically support the Infrastructure and Cloud research & test Environment (ICE), which is a data centre testbed, with Thermal Test Vehicles, chip heat flux emulators. RISE will provide access to study results and experts, as well as publications and demonstrations by RISE and engagement in small research and development studies.

A key value delivered to the collaboration is the large-scale test environment with data centre modules, climate and heat boxes, wind tunnels, edge and liquid cooling testbeds, and the ability to take simulations and concepts to the point of implemented demonstrations and tests for data collection and analysis.

“We want to come closer to the industrial needs and direct bi-lateral collaborations help the dialogue. This way we can continue to develop our thought leadership together with our industry collaborators,” says Tor Björn Minde, Director ICE Data Centre at RISE.

“We look forward to working with RISE to lead the industry into a new era of more efficient and sustainable thermal solutions,” said Viktor Tymchenko, Intel Vice President, Data Center Group, Platform Hardware Engineering Division. “Through the Intel and RISE collaboration, thermal innovations for future cloud and server platforms and facilities will come to market sooner, with the goal of benefiting the entire industry and the planet.”
