AI policy

How do we work with AI policies? The Centre for Applied AI pushes the development and dialogue on AI policies.

At a time when more and more people are talking about the need to regulate AI, it is easy to think of the EU's AI regulation or the initiatives in the US and other countries around prohibited systems and respect for our democratic processes. But policy can be so much more, such as the strategies that shape our research into language models, product safety, or international standards that provide guidelines on risk management and prescribe how to ensure data quality. In short, policies try to direct someone to behave in a certain way. And this can be done by law but also by other means.

The goal is to contribute to the development and coordination of laws and regulations for AI in Sweden and the EU, as well as to the interpretation and understanding of laws and regulations.

We work in three main ways on policy for AI:

  • We coordinate the AI Agenda, which is a network with representatives from civil society, national authorities, municipalities, small businesses, multinationals, and trade unions. As part of the work, a program has been developed and presented to the Swedish Parliament, the Government Offices, and other stakeholders, resulting in several government assignments.
  • We actively participate in organizations at EU level to monitor and influence the European agenda. We sit on the board of the Big Data Value Association, which is an interest organization in data, AI, and robotics. We also maintain an active dialogue with the Commission on upcoming EU policies relevant to AI and data, as well as on initiatives related to data centers and test and experimentation facilities.
  • We lead research projects aimed at investigating the relationship between existing and upcoming policies in relation to the market introduction of AI-based services and products and the resources required to enable the development of AI within relevant policy frameworks.
