Appearance grading of sawn wood

RISE has experience of different rules for appearance grading of sawn timber and of formulating sawmill-specific rules, which are adapted to both raw material and customers. RISE can participate in the formulation of grading rules and in setting requirements when automatic grading systems for green sorting or final grading are to be procured..

The quality of most of the sawn timber in Sweden is determined by visual grading and divided into classes according to different timber properties. The grading can be automatic or manual. There are several different grading systems and standards used in Sweden and internationally, of which the latest (2020) "Commercial Grading of Timber" is the one that in practice is the basis for most practically used rules.

All sawmills have their own specific sorting rules, which are needed for the mills to be able to deliver the desired products to their customers. The rules are more or less based on

- The "Green Book” – Guiding principles for grading of Swedish sawn timber,

- The "Blue Book” – Nordic Timber,

- The "Grey Book” – an update of Nordic Timber,

- the European standard EN 1611-1 or

- The "Black Book" – Commercial Grading of Timber.

The "Black Book", Commercial Grading of Timber, which was published in 2020, has been created through a collaboration between the sawmill industry in Sweden, Norway and Finland.
