More sound knot boards by adopted bucking in the forest.

The value relationship between sound knot products and possible alternative products varies over time by up to 15%. There are therefore financial incentives to adjust the proportion of sound knot timber up or down depending on the current economic situation.

Pine products for furniture, floors, panels and other furnishings require a high proportion of sound knots and few (preferably none) black / dry knot. This type of product is mainly made of the trunk part that coincides with the crown of the tree. The products that the forest companies prepare in the forest are mainly based on the length and diameter distribution ordered from the sawmills, without regard to the crown boundary of the trees. In 2003 Skogforsk together with Sveaskog carried out a project in which the possibility of determining the sound knot limit of the individual tree was investigated. The project was called "Automatiskt friskkvistaptering med skördare" and was carried out by Johan Möller, Lennart Moberg and Jan Sundell. The report from that project shows that it is possible to determine each individual tree's sound knot limit by a relationship between the tree's chest height diameter and the age of the stand.

This project investigates if the same system and formula can be used to increase the outcome / extraction of sound knot timber also in Norrbotten. What an introduction of sound knot adaptation would mean when implementing on a large scale is tested in a simulation.

The goal of the project is to create conditions for increasing the sawmills' production of sound knot products for floors, panels, furniture and other furnishings. If the goal is achieved, it provides an opportunity to increase the timber value in the value chain and strengthen profitability in the sawmill industry.
