In order to achieve sustainable production and consumption patterns of food and other biological products we need to conserve resources and make wise choices. Using a holistic view, RISE can help prioritise improvements in a transition toward sustainable food chains.
Facts about food and environmental impact
Using fact-based knowledge of environmental impacts, makes it easier to choose which improvement measures to implement. With a greater knowledge about the climate impact of your business, it is easier to answer questions and make priorities. At the same time, it increases your credibility. RISE has lifecycle and value chain-based expertise that we use to quantify the environmental effects of all types of food and their production systems. We possess a broad knowledge in the area. In addition, we have created RISE's unique climate database for food. Our focus is to identify opportunities for improvement and to reduce the environmental impact of the food system in a holistic perspective. Therefore, we work both in Sweden and internationally.
We quantify environmental impact from:
• agriculture
• marine foods
• animal production and feed
• biological products, bio-based side flows from food production
• raw materials and ingredients
• food processing, transport and packaging
• food consumption
How we work
We offer research and consultancy projects through our competent staff, with a unique mix of biologists, engineers, agronomists and environmental scientists. In our work we use systems analysis, life cycle assessment (LCA) and climate calculations (GWP – global warming potential, carbon footprint). We combine this with lean-inspired management and work methods for resource efficiency throughout the food chain, and with competence in nutrition for knowledge on sustainable and balanced diets. We also produce environmental data for food. Environmental data is used in applied tools to facilitate environmentally sound choices. The knowledge generated in our research is disseminated through reports, publications, education and networks.
