The National Laboratory for Electrical Quantities
RISE is Sweden's NMI (National Metrology Institute) and is, according to the Swedish constitution, responsible for the fundamental measurement quantities in the International System of Units, SI.
The National Laboratory for electrical quantities is part of RISE’s Measurement Technology Department. We realise the electrical units that are important for Swedish industry. The realisation of each unit is based on definitions according to the SI system.
Electrical metrology also plays an important role for certain quantities that are not inherently electrical but are realised by electronic means. An example is the new kilogram which, since 20 May 2019, is no longer defined by the kilogram cylinder in Paris, but by Planck’s constant. At present RISE is building a Kibble balance which will be Sweden’s new, electronic, realisation of the kilogram.
In addition to the realisation of the SI-units that are used for each electrical quantity, we also carry out calibrations, measurements, evaluations, and conduct research within each area.

For high voltage, above 1000V, and high currents, above 100 A, we refer to our National Metrology Institute for high voltage and high currents. High frequencies, in the megahertz range and above, are referred to the National Metrology Institute for high frequencies and microwave electronics.
