Efficient water use in households

Climate change has resulted in water shortages in several places in Sweden, and lack of capacity in the drinking water supply systems can also lead to a shortage of water. Resource-efficient water use is becoming important. Households account for a significant part of the use and both technical solutions and behavioral change can reduce the use.

The purpose of the project is to contribute to resource-efficient water use, and reduce the risk of water shortages, by implementing and evaluating combinations of solutions for reduced water use in households. This creates knowledge about effects, feasibility and how solutions can be combined to see what can provide the greatest water savings on a national level.

The project is carried out as a collaboration between different actors in the drinking water value chain. In four case studies with residents in villas and multi-family buildings, both established and newer technical solutions for reduced water use will be tested in combination with communication solutions to influence behaviour. This is complemented by a number of small-scale studies that examine solutions with a lower degree of maturity. The results are analyzed from a systems perspective to understand the interaction between technical solutions, communication and behaviors and give recommendations for how combinations of solutions can be used to reduce water use without leading to other negative effects.
