OrigoShift

In the OrigoShift project, we explore how we can use Virtual Reality technology, VR, to make cultural experiences accessible, and to create a new arena for cultural creators to operate through.

Within RISE’s partnership for digitalization and learning, the municipalities of Kungsbacka and Eskilstuna came together in a shared vision to use VR as a tool to include students who, for various reasons, cannot attend school, in classroom teaching. Since 2020, RISE, along with the municipalities, has developed the software Inclubit-360 to stream a real-time feed between a 360-camera and a VR headset. Inclubit-360 is now available in both Kungsbacka and Eskilstuna, but has also begun to be tested in other Swedish municipalities. The technology and software that Inclubit-360 uses is transferable to the arts and cultural sector where there are opportunities to further develop the application. This further development of Inclubit-360 has been named OrigoShift and is made possible through VR technology, multiple 360-cameras, and VR headsets.

The primary goal of the project is to create opportunities for more people to engage more actively and participatively in culture, in part to prevent isolation and feelings of exclusion. The application will make cultural experiences digitally accessible in real-time, where the virtual visitor will have an immersive experience and can navigate between different cameras themselves.

The project result is a web application with open source code that can be installed and operated independently. The application allows visitors to enter a virtual environment where they can interact and speak with each other in the form of 3D avatars. From there, visitors can proceed to a live broadcast of 360-video. The application allows the visitor to freely switch between camera angles in real-time while the broadcast is ongoing. This can be likened to Google Street View, but with live video streams.
