Research on Energy Efficient Supermarkets for practical use

Being able to store, transport and sell food that has the right temperature all the way from production to reaching the consumer requires interdisciplinary expertise. The project aims to communicate and disseminate research results to make the heating and cooling technology more efficient and sustainable.

17 percent of the world’s electricity is used for cooling people and food. More than half of the grocery store’s energy consumption goes to cooling food and the stores are installing more and more refrigerated counters.

Working climate smart in the food industry is primary a matter of knowledge about how to handle heating and cooling. Being able to store, transport and sell food that has the right temperature all the way from production to reaching the consumer requires interdisciplinary expertise. RISE has many years of expertise in supermarket cooling and energy efficient supermarkets. RISE coordinated, among other things the BeLivs network which brought together different players linked to the grocery trade and professional commercial kitchens. Together they reviewed what the industry could do to reduce its energy consumption. BeLivs was going on between 2011-2018 and has provided many insights into how grocery stores and professional kitchens can act more energy efficient. Aim
The project “Research on Energy efficient Supermarkets for practical use” aims to communicate and disseminate research results to make the heating and cooling technology more efficient and sustainable. The project fills a gap and aims to, trough activities, compile knowledge for practical use in supermarkets and thus contribute to energy and climate conversion.

The project will contribute to the energy and climate conversion through the dissemination of knowledge.

Solution
For an energy transition to be achieved, knowledge of energy efficient and sustainable supermarkets is required. RISE collects documents, checklists, and educational materials to utilize the knowledge that Belivs and other projects have acquired.

Effect
If information and results from research and innovation collaboration reach important target groups, such as customers, manufacturers, installers, energy consultants and policy makers, a change can take place in the world so that everyone has access to sustainable energy and climate change is combated. .
